It is that time of year again for the North Carolina State Shoot at the NC Homegrounds. Folks plan and practice all year for this event and hopefully it is well attended. One registered shoot over the weekend at Durham County and the Alabama State Shoot in Georgia is in the record books.
The Durham County Wildlife Club hosted a registered trapshoot Saturday June 6th. It was certainly hot that day and some good scores were broken. Greg Robinson led all singles shooters with the lone 99. Junior shooter Kenan Sloan broke a 93 to win the event but missed a punch by one shooter. Senior Vet Larry High broke a 88 to win the doubles and Ken Sloan was the HOA winner with 273x300. DCWC shoots again on July the 11th.
The Alabama State Shoot was held at the South River Gun Club over the weekend. With the Alabama State homegrounds out of business the South River location was chosen. Perfect Georgia weather for the two-day event and it was well attended. 8 North Carolina shooters attended, and a few won in a few events. The Alabama Singles Champ was Dixie Davis with a 200, Alabama Doubles Champ was Evan O’Leary with a 94, and the Alabama Handicap Champ was Junior shooter Aiden Thompson with a 97 and 25 in the shootoff. HAA winner was JR shooter Aiden Thompson with 389x400. NC singles winners included SJ Breyden Messer “C” 196, JRG Caleb Mathis 195. NC doubles winner was JRG Caleb Mathis 95. Alabama shooter Jesse Burgher attended the Alabama state meeting and commented that the Alabama State Shoot may return to South River in 2027 with possibly an extra day added to the program. 100/79/84 in 2026 and 86/72/72 in 2025 are the attendance figures and with an extra day in 2027 the attendance could increase.
The NC State Shoot is here, and folks are already at the Homergrounds preparing for this yearly event. The food truck that normally provides food for the HG will not be there this shoot and a new food vendor has been found. Weather looks hot with temps in the 90’s and the possibility of afternoon t-storms several days. Thank goodness it doesn’t look like a washout and there are no heavy wind days in the forecast. Of course, at this time of year shooting in hot weather puts an enormous strain on the body and correct hydration is super important. You must listen to your body, and it would be a good idea to google “signs of heatstroke” and take those signs to heart. With my bouts with AFIB it is even more important for me to stay hydrated at these shooting events. I hope to see some of you there and heck I might even get a picture of you.
Pat Morgan was laid to rest on Sunday June the 8th. The service was held in a little church in Snow Camp NC and it was well attended. NC shooters showed up and included Billy Thigpen, Kim and Doug McKinney, Lane Murray, James Brown, Phil Graham, Debbie and Hunter Galloway, Terry Roush and me. Pat was very involved in her church, and the service was officiated by two ministers. The current minister and the minister that married them. Larry Frye worked for the city for 44 years and a ham operator like Terry Roush and I. Please pray for Steve and the family at this time. If you have Steves phone number, please give him a call from time to time.
