Thursday Update

Post by jcallan »

We shot second squad out and it was probably about 40 degrees
with a brisk 20 mph wind that had everyone bundled up.

Addison shot the Tucson Singles Class Championship well...
but even a 96 does not cut the mustard at the largest
Satellite Grand...

Addison's 24, 24, 24, 24 fell short against Jackson Cole's
25, 25, 23, 25. Even Jackson's 98 was short of winning in
Sub Junior today.

I posted a 90 in the singles...a bit below my average.

We drew squad 111 for the Tucson Doubles Class Championship.
By the time we took the line the temperatures were in the 80s
and the winds were up to 40 mph, swirling up dust storms and
blowing folks off their mount. I switched to a dreaded baseball
cap myself for fear that my hat would end up 30 fields away.

We had great fun and a zippy squad...Addison posted an 89 and
Dad (moi) an 86 (score was 88, but two birds were not initialled
properly by the scorer and were recorded as lost back at the clubhouse).

Let this be a lesson to everyone to double check the proper DEAD in written
words by scorer even though they mark it. I will speak again to
Addison about this as squad leader. This was not a biggie for
me because my scores seldom make the board at these shoots
But others might go completely nuts.

Friday Update

Post by jcallan »

Addison shot his first 90 in doubles in a long time today.
Since that wonky round at the Hall of Fame shoot he has
never settled back into his groove.

With the field of All American Sub Juniors here a 96 took
the event with several others falling just below. Addison's
90 was in the middle of the pack. How these kids shoot so
well stuns the adults here.

Dad slipped back to an 80...shooting over the top (cannot get
the dip back :P ) on most second birds...when I was not dutching
pairs. I felt so confused about my embarrassing round I went down
to the practice trap and went another 50 pair in doubles to
try and figure this senior moment out .

Addison fared a lot better in handicap at his new yardage with a 93,
but a 95 took the event, with two other All American Sub Juniors
tying at 94. The Sub Juniors are amazing shooters, some arriving
with AAA averages. I heard some AA vets musing behind me saying
that they may have a better chance if they had registered as
Sub Juniors.

This tournament is huge. Event entries are running in the high
600s to high 700s for each event. They are running 20 banks for
doubles and 10 banks of four traps for singles and handicap.
Parking is tough, but not as challenging as we have seen here
in the past.

The weather is strange. Mornings start in the 40s and jump to
about 81 or 82 by 2PM. You shoot the first event with a jacket
or two shirts and then peel off the clothes and come back in
the afternoon with short sleeves.

Winds can really be challenging and we started with week in pretty
good shape with very early squads, but with the late afternoon heat
the winds come down and make for some sporting shots in the early
morning and late afternoon. Last night the winds were so high they
decided to avoid shoot offs until this evening.

Singles Championship - Saturday

Post by jcallan »

We shot on squad 21 and have already finished.
Addison shot a pair of 98s for a 196. He dropped
two on the first field of the back 100 and ran
the remaining 94 targets. He was running close behind a AAA
and two AAs that had shot 99s in the first 100, so
we are waiting to see if he shoots for place or for
points or if one of these three pulled a 100, 99 or
98 (likely given the talent here).

Dad shot a 95 and finished with a 182...I will let you figure out
my dreadful back nine.

By 5:30 PM it was clear that two Sub Juniors had tied at 198 and
were going to shoot-off for Sub Junior. One was listed as the "B"
class high score and Addison was tied with about 8 others at
196 for "B" class runner up. He had third place Sub Junior points
locked up, so we left for dinner and did not stay for the "B" class
shoot-offs.
