2011 Delaware State Shoot - Addison and Jim Callan

Post by jcallan »

The first day of the Delaware State Shoot was hot, very hot. Real feel was over 90 degrees. It was hazy until about 11AM. When the haze burned off the winds picked up. It is always windy up in Millington and the handicap scores rather reflected this...

I am not really sure how I can upload the photos I took (Fred), as I do not have the adapter I use for the memory card. I will make a point to embellish this with some photos.

Not many shooters shot today. I will try to update this later with numbers, but it was very quiet here today. This was mainly a preliminary day and it also doubled as the Delaware Counties annual shoot.

Although only Open trophies were available and no Sub Junior categories were offered, Addison picked up Event 1 handicap Junior trophy with an 88 (see what I meant about the low scores), he likely either won the Event 2 singles event for Junior or Class "C" with a 99, depending on a carry over outcome later this week. He also won the Event 3 handicap Junior trophy with a 92. We were two of the last three shooters that made up the last squad for event 4 doubles. The sun was dreadful (what right bird?) and the winds had picked up... I think Addison had an 80. Doubles was my only good showing today with an 86, with which I was quite happy.

Today was mainly about getting used to the wind and background here, and if Addison did well, great. None of the 4 events today earn AA points. The trophies are rather nifty. I will snap some photos and post when I can.

Clay Floyd and Dale W. showed up from VA. Mr. Skarkey from the SC shoot showed up with his two sons (very young and they seemed to enjoy seeing Dad shoot). I spoke with David Shaffer, and he was working the shoot until the championship events on Sunday. His fiancee is doing better...but still some time to see yet.

It was also good to see some other familiar faces from our prior visits up here.
More tomorrow.

Best always,
The Callans

Saturday and Sunday Results

Post by jcallan »

Saturday's Class events did not go well. Addison began the day with one of
his cluster headaches and although shooting well for a Sub Junior posted no
winning scores. His last round was shot with tears streaming...the whole
squad could sense the pain. Having shot with migraines, I felt for the kid.
Addison posted 87 in doubles, 92 in handicap and 93 in singles. I posted a
79 in doubles, 87 in handicap and 93 in singles.

Today's Championship Singles event was a bit overcast for most of the day.
Addison still had his headache (they tend to come in clusters) but tried to
isolate himself between events and kept in dark areas. He started with a 93
and finished strong with a 96 for a 189, which did not win Sub Junior open
but which did tie for Class, wherein he shot off and won 25/23.

Memorial Day Results

Post by jcallan »

Memorial Day began hot and with a dangerous heat advisory. The sky was hazy
and at the start of the shoot the wind was down as can be seen of this shot
of the flag and scorebaord below:

The Event 9 Doubles Championship scores follow:

Clay Floyd posted a 99 and Louis Goodwin (a strong doubles shooter from MD that donated the Muzzle Loader to the Sub Juniors) posted a 97.

The winds picked up before handicap and they were sending the targets into
the stratosphere. Scores went in the opposite direction, with the high score
posting in of 95.

The Event 10 Handicap Championship scores follow:

Following the handicap, the Sub Junior shooters were summoned to shoot off
for a Muzzle Loader donated by Louis Goodwin. The photo below shows the
Sub Juniors gathering for the shoot off.

Three Sub Juniors shot in th1 18 and 19 yard group shown below:

Two others shot from 19.5 and 21.5 yards respectively. The winds quickly
eliminated the longer yardage shooters.

In the end Dylan Kline won the Muzzle Loader and was presented the gun
by Louis.

Next, Kevis Sutton and Addison Callan shot off for the Doubles Sub Junior
Championship title.

Addison prevailed 7 to 6. The top Sub Juniors for the 2011 Delaware State Shoot were Dylan Kline (won all Class Championship events, HAA Sub Junior and
the Muzzle Loader), Kevin Sutton (won Handicap Championship SubJr.) and
Addison Callan (First State Handicap, Blue Hen Singles, ROn Chall Memorial
Handicap, Diamond State Doubles, Singles Championship Class "C",
Doubles Championship Sub Junior and HOA Sub Junior).
