The Rockingham Gun Club held their monthly registered shoot Saturday July 28th, 2012. Dubbed the “Mid-Summer” shoot it sure felt like summertime for sure. I rolled up to the club and it was 74 degrees and I had the windows rolled down.
I posted a shoot report from the “Mid-Summer” shoot in 2010 and the handicap winner that day was the beloved Elmo Matkins with a 94. Sure miss Elmo, Joe and the other Rock shooters that have gone on.
We had a bigger than normal turnout and we appreciate all the VA shooters for attending the shoot. A group of us are planning to ride up to Lynchburg next Saturday to reciprocate with attending their shoot.
The singles got off to a little bit of a rough start with trap three acting up and trap two was having a hard time throwing a left hand target. I was the ref on trap 2 and we appreciate everybody bearing with us until we got it fixed.
The skies were clear pretty much for all of the singles and the wind decided to pick up when the first wave started shooting. I wound up scoring for the singles winner and he broke 50 straight on the trap with all the right hand birds. Karole sure gave him a run for his money with a 48x50 and wound up posting the 2nd highest score with a 97.
It was horse race in the handicap event with the fellow getting a punch only one bird better than the next highest competitors score. John Miller and JC Nunn posted 90’s and were only 1 bird away from some concrete. Winky Mabe broke the high score and he is way back on the 21 now.
We wound up setting up trap 2 for doubles and it was quite a spectacle watching these folks break targets. The eventual winner could not believe he had won and I guess he felt like he had backed into the win. Ronnie “Hippie” Manuel broke the top score and John Miller was just one bird away for a shootoff.
John Miller fought hard all three hundred targets and won the HOA with 99+90+86 for a 275x300. He shot good enough to win but I know he feels like his scores could have been a lot better. I really enjoy watching him shoot and maybe that is what makes scoring so much fun.
We had Levi and Hunter Bolan join us from VA Saturday and Hunter broke a 95 in the singles. John Rexrode rode up with Fred Daniels and I enjoyed watching him shoot that Super-X and “Activ” shells in doubles. All in all I believe everybody had a great time and thanks to all that attended.
I will post the scores below for your viewing pleasure!
