Good morning and can you believe July is already here. I mean they are selling Christmas items already and Christmas movies are playing. Several shoots last week including a BIG50 at Buckhorn and shoots at Ft. “Bragg” Liberty and Durham County. Buckhorn hosts a two-day event this weekend.
North Carolina shooters participated in other shoots including the Maryland and New York State shoots. The Galloways traveled to Thurmont Maryland and Jeff managed to win A Class non-res doubles on Sunday. David Smiley, Tiffany Decker and Brad Barnett showed up in New York and David brought a few awards home including non-res doubles RU on Sunday. I am sure Tiffany won a few things but did not dig too far to find out. I know she had a 195 in singles on Saturday. Big shout out to Brian Luther and his induction into the NY Hall of Fame and to Dave Shaffer for winning the MD singles, doubles, handicap and HOA…
With the July 4th week upon us both Virginia and Kentucky will hold their state shoots and NC shooters will be traveling to those events. I know the Galloways are headed to VA and the Allen family are headed to Kentucky. Good luck to all and safe travels. Oh, Gage Malone and the McInteers will be skipping the VA state shoot and heading out West to participate in the Wyoming State Shoot…….
Wednesday the Buckhorn Gun Club hosted a BIG50 on the hottest day so far in 2024. Chris Powell won the singles and Ed Gideon won the handicap, doubles and HOA. Their next BIG50 will be held on July 24th.
Ft. “Bragg” Liberty hosted a registered shoot and here is the writeup that was provided by NCTA Prez Marty Hill. We had 25 shooters to show up early this morning to break some clay targets at Fort Liberty in the "toasty" Sandhills. We started at 9:00 am with the temps already in the 80's. By the end of Doubles around 1:30 the temperature had reached 95 with a heat index of 102. We had very little wind which made for good scores, but almost intolerable conditions. Thanks to Greg High, John Miller, Jim Wilson and Gail Soper for scoring on a very hot day. Thanks to Jim, Greg, Rodney and John for setting targets. Thanks to all that braved the weather and shot today.
Singles found Isaac McCoy on the top with a 98. Earl Blakeney was high in caps with a 94 and earned a 1/2 yard for his efforts. Ed Gideon bested everyone in doubles with a 96. Ed also won HOA with a 96-93-96 - 285. Ed wanted Mark and Doug to take note of his HOA win while they were home in the cool. Their next shoot is August 17th.
Durham County also hosted a trap shoot Saturday with Ray Corona winning the singles, Caleb Mathis winning the handicap, Colson Allen winning the doubles. Not sure but it looks like Colson won the HOA also. Their next registered event is July 13th.
The Buckhorn Gun Club will host a two-day trap shoot this weekend. Normally they will shoot 100 of each both days but do not hold me to that. It looks like it will be hot with the chance of afternoon t-storms. Lunch is always good at Buckhorn and not sure what is on the menu.
Looking deeper into July Morgan Shaw said the two-day shoot looks like the “IRONMAN” 300 handicap and 100 pair of doubles on Saturday with 200 singles on Sunday. If you need targets before the Grand this might be the place to get them.
Lead reclamation is underway at the Rockingham County Gun Club. 14-3050 pounds bags of lead have already been retrieved and they say that those 14 bags isn’t even 10% of what is left. So are we looking at 100 bags before it is all said and done, only time will tell.
I hope everyone has a great July 4th holiday weekend. Some folks are headed to the coast and others to the mountains. Some are heading to state shoots and that will be fun also. I might even slide down to Buckhorn to take a few pictures and shoot some targets. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Will, Thea and Anne and until next week……..smokem
