July 8th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

Good grief it has been hot, and it rained here in Jamestown Sunday. With state shoots in VA and KY and here locally it was just a matter of time before you had to shoot in the rain. We had shooters in VA and KY and some found the winners circle.

Buckhorn shot Saturday and Dan Johnson won the singles with a 99, Kevin Biss got a yard punch with and 97 and Jimmy Wilson won the doubles with a 94. Dan also won the HOA with a 278. It was hot and there was very little wind with clear skies early and then the clouds started drifting in. Dan mentioned to me that if he did shoot Sunday, he would be registering his 50,000th doubles target.

Sunday the weather was similar but a little cooler but with high humidity. They were hurrying things along to avoid the weather that was headed East. Dan was perfect in the singles with David Nelson getting a half yard for a 96 and Joe Nalley smoked 99 for the doubles win. Dan won the HOA with a solid 286x300.

I was able to follow along with NC shooters in Kentucky but Virginia not so much. I know there were 7 NC shooters in Kentucky including the Boone boys Shawn Reese, Randy Jones, Will Price and BRCB Keith Forbes. David Smiley broke a 100 straight in doubles Sunday morning and congrats to him. There were only two more 100’s beside his 100 straight. Check www.shootscoreboard.com for all the KY shoot info.

Virginia finally posted some scores maybe Saturday and hopefully they will post the winners in another format. I know the Galloways were there along with Jacob Gossett, Marty Hill and Greg High. I did not dig in deep to see who else was there and hopefully we will know something this week. I did hear that it looked like the numbers were down possibly with about 160 +/- in the championship singles Saturday. The West Virginia State shoot will be held next week and hopefully the numbers will be up with no conflict from PA shoots.

A couple of shoots this week with one in NC and the other in VA. Saturday the Durham County Wildlife club will host a typical 300 target program shoot. The Brushy Mountain Gun Club in Hurt VA will be hosting a typical 300 target program also. Weather in both locations predicts a chance of rain with temps near 90 degrees. Hydration is a must, and heat-related issues can be fatal so please be careful!

Rockingham County Gun Club is about to wrap up the lead reclamation project. Estimates currently rest at 250,000 pounds of lead retrieved. With the recent rain it might slow them down a bit but hopefully it will not be a problem. The EPA is getting a little touchy about contaminated water runoff especially from lead. I didn’t realize that gun clubs are responsible for testing and submitting reports to stay compliant

NC just lost another trapshooter. Joy Duncan informed me at the NC state shoot that Andy was battling an illness. Had no idea that he was that close to passing. Please pray for the family and most of you reading this may not have known him.
