July 15th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

Well, what can I say other than man it has been hot. And to top it off it is going to be even hotter this week. One shoot over the weekend at the Durham County Wildlife Club and we had youth shooters in Montana and Virginia for the West Virginia State Shoot.

Durham shot Saturday and it was a hot day to shoot in North Carolina. Ray Corona won the singles, and the handicap and Larry High won the doubles. Always a good time at Durham County and thanks to Scarlett Su for the score info.

I rolled up to Brushy Mountain Virginia to shoot Saturday and the weather was great but of course hot. Not a big crowd but everyone had a good time. No info on the winners and hope to make it back up there in August.

North Carolina shooter Gage Malone had to travel all the way to Montana to break a 96 and land on the 27-yard line. I got text from an unknown number, and it included a picture of Gage. It turned out to be the son of NC Hall of Famer P.E. Pete Davis, none other than Phil Davis. He resides in Montana and traveled to NC several years ago for the NC State Shoot.

Gage traveled with the McInteer family from Virginia. They left the VA state shoot and did an 8-hour day and then two 12 hour days to arrive at the shoot. Sam broke two 100’s in singles during the week and won non-res HOA and HAA Lady I and other trophies. Her father Jimmy also captured a Montana trophy for his efforts.

Five NC youth shooters traveled to Winchester VA for the WVA State Shoot. Isaac Mccoy, Colson Allen, Jacob Gossett and the Mathis brothers all attended. At this time all the results are not in, but I do know that Isaac, Colson and Jacob all captured an award from the shoot. Jacob Gossett was the hi-gun in doubles one day with a 99. Glad to see all the youth shooters out competing in other states. Go to www.shootscoreboard.com for shoot info for Montana and WVA state shoots.

Saturday the Rockingham County Gun Club will host a BIG50 with registration at 8 and shooting will begin at 9 or before if squads are ready. Come on out and you do not have to be an ATA member to shoot the BIG50 format shoots.

I spent a little time on the phone with John Sandell Sunday night. He had mentioned the heat in New England and stated that he quit shooting after two rounds due to the heat. Which brings up the hydration factor in hot weather shooting. Heat stroke can be deadly do please be careful. John shoots at the Minuteman Gun Club and shot with the ”Cane” brothers this week. He calls them the Cane brothers because both walk with a cane. One sits in a plastic chair for stability and got so hot he couldn’t get out of the chair. John asked him if he was drinking plenty of water and he said it was in the car. John and his wife Grace shoot at the Aynor Gun Club with Dave Daily when they visit Myrtle Beach.

Shot reclamation is about to come to an end at the Rockingham County Gun Club. With a BIG50 shoot this weekend the crew should be on their way back home. I am not sure exactly what the total bag count is, but it looks like more than 75 three thousand fifty-pound bags. If you are a gun club looking at shot reclamation Gipson-Ricketts has been a great group to work with.

That will do it for this week and folks are preparing to head to the Grand American in just a few weeks. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mark, John, Will, Thea and Anne and until next week…….smokem
