October 7th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

It is Monday morning, and it was a great weather weekend for all the relief efforts in Western North Carolina. There is so much information floating around with rescues and recoveries and deliveries of much needed items. Our prayers go out for all involved and bless those that have pitched in to help.

Several shoots over the weekend including Rockingham County and Charlie Brown. RCGC had a good turnout Saturday with VA Junior Gold shooter Grant Hearn running the 100 on field 5. VA shooter Brian Coates got a punch for his 94 and Isaac McCoy went 49/48 for the doubles win. Isaac McCoy’s 96/92/97 secured the HOA and that is some great shooting. I have no info on the BIG50 Sunday and hope to report that next Sunday. It was great to see some of the Boone boys Saturday including Bobby Jones, Shawn Reese and Will Price. I believe they had a good time and wanted to get off the hill for a little bit. Also, George Powell drove up from South Carolina to register some targets and always great to see him.

Charlie Brown hosted a BIG50 and had a great turnout. 22/16/13 participated in the event and some good scores were broken. The thought behind the BIG50 format was to attract shooters that were not ATA members. They could shoot with ATA members and get a feel for the trap competitive format. This has attracted youth to the Charlie Brown Gun Club and has helped increase their participation. In fact, some of the folks that broke the winning scores were non-ATA members. Eric Blakeney won the singles with a perfect 50 with Brad Wetherell a close second with a 49. Brad broke a 48 to be the high score in handicap and Megan Smith was hi-gun in doubles with a 42. Brad also won the HOA with a 135 and that is some great shooting. That will be the last registered shoot for 2024 and 2025 will provide some future dates.

Allan Davis is on the mend I believe from a knee replacement, and I know he would like to be out shooting. He suffered a bit so he could attend some shoots and picked the off season for rehab. He will be out soon enough terrorizing the neighborhood with that Kolar soon enough.

Two trapshooting events this week with CCLEOA hosting a BIG50 Friday and Buckhorn hosting a typical 300 target program on Sunday. Looking at the weather it looks great for both locations but that could change depending on the path of hurricane Milton.

Looking into 2025 the NCHOF and the South Carolina State Shoot will take place April 30th through May 4th at the NC Homegrounds. Not sure if it is the same trophy format for the HOF but limited trophies will be awarded. Trophies for Hi-Gun for singles, caps, doubles and HOA like 2024. Noah Gouge and Brian Keever will be inducted at the Saturday night banquet.

That is going to do it for this week and I hope everyone enjoys the cooler weather. Like I said it looks like the hurricane will go out into the Atlantic but who knows. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Will, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
