September 4th Smoke Report
Posted: Sun Sep 03, 2023 9:37 pm
September is here and already the NC/SC Coast has gotten hammered with torrential rain. I hope you are enjoying the Labor Day Holiday. The gun club in Aynor SC cancelled their monthly shoot due to flooding and they were 29 miles inland. Buckhorn hosted a two-day shoot over the weekend and Durham County shoots this Saturday the 9th.
Buckhorn shot Saturday and Sunday and lo and behold Dan Johnson showed up to play. Karole “Cupcake” Miller finally got the monkey off her back and broke her 1st 100 in singles. Her squad consisted of Dan, NCTA VP Joe Nalley and Darvin Cornett. Karole is shooting a Syren shotgun, and her Syren hat took a beating during the ceremonial hat shooting.
Karole won the singles with a 100, Ed Gideon won the handicap with a 94 and the HOA with a 277. VA shooter Ted Carwile led all doubles shooters with a 95. Looks like Doug McKinney slid up from Florida and always good to see him back in North Carolina. Buckhorn will shoot again October 29th so please make a note of it.
The Durham County Wildlife Club shoots this Saturday, and their previous shoot was cancelled due to a scheduled power out to the area including the gun club. Scarlett always puts on a great shoot and lunch is great also. She can provide you a link to a google document so that you can pre-register for the event. Her email is scarlett885@yahoo.com so email her and she can provide the pre-register document.
I ran into trap shooter Ken Moore and his lovely wife Friday at the Costco in Winston Salem. They were out shopping, and I spotted him on my way out the door eating a hotdog. A year or so ago I was in Boone and dropped by Wal-Mart and ran into Randy Boone Jones of all people! I just never know who I am going to run into….
Well, I guess everyone is waiting to hear how my Vitrectomy went. Several folks that read the smoke report were initially confused about the procedure and thought I was getting a procedure down under that sounded like Vitrectomy. And for trivia I had a Frenulectomy at age 16 and google that one for more info. Anyway, the surgery went fine except for the nurse anesthetist ripping the ekg leads off my hairy chest with one yank. No pain to speak of and it looks like the floaters are gone from the right eye. Not sure when my left eye is scheduled, and I might miss the Dixie altogether. Thank goodness for technology and good insurance. The cost of these two procedures is about the cost of 2/3’s of a new Kolar Combo…
The Rockingham County Gun Club will be hosting a 300-target event on September 16th called the Memorial Shoot. Along with money returned to the shooter we have now $300 worth of added money for the hi-gun winner in singles, handicap and doubles. Lane Murray donated in the memory of Elmo Matkins for the singles, Sandy Wyatt donated in the memory of Lewis Wyatt for the handicap, and I donated for the doubles in the memory of JC Nunn. There might be $100 donated for the HOA and that is not confirmed at the moment. If you plan to attend, contact me to pre-register to make things go a little smoother on Saturday morning. Also, the MIDDLE 50 pot is sitting at $1625, and you must enter three times to be eligible to participate.
Looking into October, the Rockingham County Gun Club will celebrate National Trapshooting Month on October 14th. Currently this is listed as a 300-target event but will be a BIG50 and we hope to have Shamrock leather trophies for the event. We hope the RCGC board will approve the purchase and we will get the trophies on order. This will be the third time we have offered these special leather trophies and folks really enjoy winning them.
That is about it for this week and the heat just will not go away. I am so looking forward to cooler mornings and afternoons! Have a great week everybody and hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, Thea and Anne and until next week………smokem
