September 4th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

September is here and already the NC/SC Coast has gotten hammered with torrential rain. I hope you are enjoying the Labor Day Holiday. The gun club in Aynor SC cancelled their monthly shoot due to flooding and they were 29 miles inland. Buckhorn hosted a two-day shoot over the weekend and Durham County shoots this Saturday the 9th.

Buckhorn shot Saturday and Sunday and lo and behold Dan Johnson showed up to play. Karole “Cupcake” Miller finally got the monkey off her back and broke her 1st 100 in singles. Her squad consisted of Dan, NCTA VP Joe Nalley and Darvin Cornett. Karole is shooting a Syren shotgun, and her Syren hat took a beating during the ceremonial hat shooting.

Karole won the singles with a 100, Ed Gideon won the handicap with a 94 and the HOA with a 277. VA shooter Ted Carwile led all doubles shooters with a 95. Looks like Doug McKinney slid up from Florida and always good to see him back in North Carolina. Buckhorn will shoot again October 29th so please make a note of it.

The Durham County Wildlife Club shoots this Saturday, and their previous shoot was cancelled due to a scheduled power out to the area including the gun club. Scarlett always puts on a great shoot and lunch is great also. She can provide you a link to a google document so that you can pre-register for the event. Her email is scarlett885@yahoo.com so email her and she can provide the pre-register document.

I ran into trap shooter Ken Moore and his lovely wife Friday at the Costco in Winston Salem. They were out shopping, and I spotted him on my way out the door eating a hotdog. A year or so ago I was in Boone and dropped by Wal-Mart and ran into Randy Boone Jones of all people! I just never know who I am going to run into….

Well, I guess everyone is waiting to hear how my Vitrectomy went. Several folks that read the smoke report were initially confused about the procedure and thought I was getting a procedure down under that sounded like Vitrectomy. And for trivia I had a Frenulectomy at age 16 and google that one for more info. Anyway, the surgery went fine except for the nurse anesthetist ripping the ekg leads off my hairy chest with one yank. No pain to speak of and it looks like the floaters are gone from the right eye. Not sure when my left eye is scheduled, and I might miss the Dixie altogether. Thank goodness for technology and good insurance. The cost of these two procedures is about the cost of 2/3’s of a new Kolar Combo…

The Rockingham County Gun Club will be hosting a 300-target event on September 16th called the Memorial Shoot. Along with money returned to the shooter we have now $300 worth of added money for the hi-gun winner in singles, handicap and doubles. Lane Murray donated in the memory of Elmo Matkins for the singles, Sandy Wyatt donated in the memory of Lewis Wyatt for the handicap, and I donated for the doubles in the memory of JC Nunn. There might be $100 donated for the HOA and that is not confirmed at the moment. If you plan to attend, contact me to pre-register to make things go a little smoother on Saturday morning. Also, the MIDDLE 50 pot is sitting at $1625, and you must enter three times to be eligible to participate.

Looking into October, the Rockingham County Gun Club will celebrate National Trapshooting Month on October 14th. Currently this is listed as a 300-target event but will be a BIG50 and we hope to have Shamrock leather trophies for the event. We hope the RCGC board will approve the purchase and we will get the trophies on order. This will be the third time we have offered these special leather trophies and folks really enjoy winning them.

That is about it for this week and the heat just will not go away. I am so looking forward to cooler mornings and afternoons! Have a great week everybody and hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, Thea and Anne and until next week………smokem

Labor Day 2014 Smoke Report
Post by smokem » Sun Aug 31, 2014 10:32 pm

Good morning to all and I hope you and your family are enjoying Labor Day off. Hot Saturday and a little breezy Sunday around here in Jamestown and a chance of rain today. Buckhorn hosted a three day event ending today and there are three shoots in NC this Saturday the 6th.

Jerry Ricker is holding his own according to info supplied by Carolyn Keever. She has assured me that any new info will be passed on immediately. Richard Colley called me last week checking on Jerry and I really didn't have a ton of info to share with him. I know that folks are praying for him and anything is possible.

Buckhorn hosted a three day shoot over the Labor Day weekend and I will get the shoot report for all three days tonight....fingers crossed. I talked to Danny Lloyd Sunday night and he said it was hot Saturday and a little cooler Sunday. John Miller broke a 100 in the singles on Saturday but no info from the morning and evening handicaps. Sunday Karole Miller won the caps with a 91 and Danny followed closed behind with a 90. No info on the singles or the 100 pair of doubles. I asked Danny about how he liked the pink White Flyers and he said he had no issues with the birds and wore rose colored lenses.

Three shoots the 6th and they include Coharie, Durham County Wildlife Club and the Rockingham Gun Club. Typical 300 target program at all three clubs with MID Pots at CSL and Durham and 1st/mid/last 50 pots at the Rock. Weather for Saturday looks like low 90's and a 50% chance of rain but let's face it anything can happen. Programs should be posted Monday or Tuesday and these are targets going on the new year so please re-up your membership with the ATA if you are a yearly member.

I called JC last week and checked on him. He quit his job at the Auto Auction and he will sorely be missed since he is one of a few that can drive a stick. He will have a little more time to putt around the house and visit his wife's sister that lost her husband about 5 months ago. He is looking forward to the Hall Of Fame shoot and always enjoys the feed that is put on by the Old Hickory Club.

Speaking of the Old Hickory club I got in touch with Ronnie Smith last week and checked to see how Lillian was doing. Lillian is getting around slowly and is unable to talk according to Ronnie. She had been wanting him to take her to the club to shoot skeet and he said she broke 13 out of 25 in the condition she is in. Ronnie is taking care of the Old Hickory Club and hosts quite a few non-registered events. He stays quite busy and he always has that place looking great.

Jeff Galloway took a trip to the Spartanburg Gun Club Saturday to deliver a gun he had worked on. He shot some practice on field four with his friend a few of the locals. They charge 7 bucks a round for practice and that really makes you appreciate the price that you pay at your club. Sunday Jeff went to the big flea market in Hillsville VA and wound up buying a H&R 750 Pioneer bolt action 22 rifle. I asked for a few more details but he never texted me back.

Ok that is about it for this week and I am really looking forward to cooler weather. Hello to Scott up North and Lou down South and Hap out West and until next week.......................................Smokem..
