October 2nd Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

What a great weather weekend in North Carolina with cooler temps and minimal precipitation. The Dixie Grand is over and one shoot in NC this weekend at the Charlie Brown Gun Club.

The Dixie Grand ended Sunday and the weather and attendance was good. A couple of overcast and cool days led to a beautiful weekend. If you are interested in seeing all the winners from the shoot go to http://www.shootscorebard.com. The 2023 Doubles Champ is Tyler Honnold with a 99 and he also won the singles with a 200 straight. Michael Pobiega won the handicap on Sunday with a 97. HOA 966 and HAA 388 winner was Herbert Lewis from Kentucky.

It takes a ton of planning to host an event like this and hats off to the NCTA and the HOF for another great event. The grounds were immaculate, and the targets were great all week. With 16 traps in action and the wave in place the handicap was over at 1:10 Sunday. That left plenty of sunlight for the shootoffs for the handicap and the HAA. The next event scheduled for the homegrounds is the HOF in April 2024. Also, thanks to Tiffany Decker for taking pictures last week!

I forgot to mention that Tom Shelley is a gall bladder lighter and feeling much better. He showed up at the Dixie Saturday bearing fresh Alaska salmon from his last excursion. Always great to hear from Tom and hopefully he will be back to shooting real soon.

My spy way up North John Sandell is reporting great weather and leaves turning color. Always great to hear from John and prayers for him regarding some medical issues he is dealing with. His wife is also a good shot from what I hear from Dave Daily.

A big shoutout to RCGC shooter Mark Spoon and his 7 round shoot off for Vet RU after a 198 in the Saturday singles. He shot against William Natcher the owner of CAC in Pa that is a supplier of shotgun shooting supplies and targets like Crowe here in North Carolina.
One trap shoot this Saturday at the Charlie Brown Gun Club. BIG50 format and I have no other details. The gun club is a great place to shoot and it has been awhile since I have shot there.

Ok that is about it for this week, and I hope everyone has a great week. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, Thea and Anne and until next week…….smokem

October 6th Smoke Report

Hello to all and a very good morning to you. There were two shoots over the weekend and the Coharie shoot has been cancelled for this Saturday. Saturday was windy and Sunday was clear and cool and maybe a glimpse at weather to come.

Kirk House posted on Facebook that his sister Elizabeth passed away while visiting NC from her home in Hawaii. She worked for the News & Record here in Greensboro before making the move to Hawaii. I posted her obituary in the "finished careers" section of the site. She was the daughter of Doug House former ATA president and also a 1990 inductee into the NC Hall Of Fame.

JC Nunn will be visiting the doctor in the morning to look at his options for his condition. I hate to say it but JC has been diagnosed with liver cancer and was told by his son Ricky on Saturday. I visited with JC Friday and gave him the card that everybody signed at the Hall Of Fame shoot. I read each and everyone of the messages that were written on the card and he appreciated the thought. Lane Murray visited JC on Sunday afternoon and spent about 30 minutes with him. Lane said he was in good spirits considering his weakened condition. Please pray for him and his family at this time and hopefully he can beat cancer the second time around.

The Rock shot Saturday and the weather was nice and windy. Jeff Galloway won the singles, handicap, doubles and the HOA amongst the crowd that attended. Levi Bolan rode down from VA to shoot with us and he was one of only two folks to break a 25 in the singles. Rockingham shoots next on the 19th offering a non-registered Lewis Class shoot. Come out and join us if you can.

Coharie does not shoot this Saturday and their shoot has been moved to November 8th........

Looking at the October shoot schedule Old Hickory and Gastonia shoot the 18th, Buckhorn has a two day shoot the 18th & 19th and Watauga and Ft. Bragg host their shoots on the 25th.

Jeff Galloway brought one of his co-workers out to the Rock Saturday and she got to shoot a round with Lewis Wyatt's modified Beretta AL-391. She did quite well and I posted pictures and video of her outing. Look for NC CLUB NEWS then Hannah Bell at the Rock.

Have a great week and hello to Scott up North and Lou down South and until next week..........................................Smokem
