Good morning and I hope you got some much needed rain in your area. Not much going on locally over the weekend but one BIG50 and Zone shooting around the country. This week Buckhorn shoots a BIG50 Wednesday and Old Hickory and Watauga shoot over the weekend.

The Rockingham County Gun Club hosted an ATA registered BIG50 Saturday, and the forecast called for rain. Shooting cranked up on time and several squads took the line for the singles event. We welcomed 4 new first-time shooters at the BIG50 including 10-year-old Carter Queen, Brushy Mtn. member Eddie Dodson, RCGC life member Gary Wade and last but not least the one and only Jay Bunting. After the singles finished the top shooter was Jay Bunting with a perfect 50 straight shooting an early serial number Remington 90T. Ed Gideon and Lane Murray were a close second with 47's.
Two squads took the line for handicap and the wind would come and go and the clouds got darker and darker in the southwest skies. Ed Gideon and Isaac McCoy posted 49's with Bunting second with a 45 shooting a classic Reminton 1100. One squad shot the doubles and when the smoke cleared Isaac McCoy was hi-gun with a 44. Ed and Isaac tied for the HOA. Rockingham will shoot next in September at their annual Memorial Shoot.

The Southern Zone was shot over 4 days in three locations including Odessa Florida, Berea Kentucky and Biloxi Mississippi. North Carolina youth shooters traveled to KY and Keith Forbes, Nathan Glaspy and Colson Allen all shot well. I know Keith Forbes broke a 198 Saturday to win C Class and great shooting. He might be a candidate for a NCBOZO99 pin if he broke a pair of 99’s.

Buckhorn will shoot a BIG50 this Wednesday with registration at 11 and shooting to begin at noon. Always have a good time at BGC and thanks for holding these events during the week. You just don’t know who will come out and play.

Saturday the Old Hickory Gun Club at Rocky Mount will host a typical 300 target program. The weather looks ok with temps in the low 80’s and a 40% chance of rain. Up in the North Carolina mountains the Watauga Gun Club will host a two-day Tom Pitts Memorial event that includes 200 handicap – 100 pair of doubles on Saturday and 200 singles targets on Sunday. That is a total of 600 targets over two days with temps in the low 70’s and 40% chance of rain on both days. Good luck to all the shooters at all of these events.

The 125th Annual Grand American is just a few weeks away and folks are preparing to travel to Illinois for the festivities. I traveled with JC Nunn to Sparta in 2006 and had to stay 40 miles away. Riding 40 miles each morning and evening made for a long day. We crossed the Mississippi River each day and passed through Chester Illinois which has the Popeye memorial statue. It will be great to see some new faces and some old acquaintances.

Some of you folks might remember David Barron who shot for a few years and quite well I might add. Evidently, he was hospitalized and is still in the hospital. I know it is heart related but not sure of his condition at the moment. Tommy Brown had a good report from the doctors at the VA and it appears he is on the mend. He is back out shooting some and getting things sorted out. Morgan Shaw’s son encountered a deer at 55mph, and his airbag didn’t even deploy. Morg says that is the 5th deer the family has collected with cars so far.

Ok that is about it for this week. I hope everyone has a great week and hopefully some of you can get out and shoot this week. The target year ends soon so get those targets in if you can. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Will, Thea and Anne and until next week…….smokem
