October 6th Smoke Report
Posted: Sun Oct 05, 2025 10:40 pm

The Dixie Grand week is here, and the festivities will begin on Tuesday. Not sure who is already on the grounds, but I would imagine it is quite a few folks. It takes a ton of planning and hard work to host a big event and hats off to those who make it happen.
CCLEOA shot last Friday and Rich Evans was nice enough to send us the results. Eric Blakeney won the singles, and Doyle Thigpen won the handicap, doubles and the HOA. Being so close to where my mom lives, I need to get down there to shoot and visit her for a few days.
Tuesday there will be three events with the Tyler Honnold Singles, Michael Pobiega Handicap and Tyler Honnold Doubles. Thursday – Friday will offer two events per day with 200 singles on Saturday and 100 handicap on Sunday. I am not sure of the count for Saturdays singles, but I predict anywhere from 250 to 300 entries. Shooting will begin at 8:30 so please be ready in case there are empty early squads. Folks not being on time really can bunch things up.
In case you are looking for something to eat Philco Food Truck will be on-site providing a varied menu. They provided concessions at the Spartanburg Gun Club when the SC State Shoot was actually held in Spartanburg. They have modified their menu to cater to the tastes of the trapshooting clientele.
Sad to report that Randy “Boone” Jones mother Betty Jean Phillips Jones passed away on September 29th. Please remember his family during this time of mourning. I reported last week that Evalyn Sudderth’s Father and Sister were in hospice. James C. Cantrell passed on October the 2nd so please remember their family in prayer. Not sure if George will make it to the shoot but you just never know.
I reached out to former trap shooter Jim Daughteridge to inform him of the upcoming shoot in Bostic. He is an avid Harley rider, and it would be a snap to buzz up the Forest City area. He let me know that he would be attending a HD rally that will be traveling through SC and GA. Maybe he can plan now to attend the SC State Shoot that could be possibly held again at the NC Homegrounds in 2026. I know he reads the smoke report and Jim as soon as the dates are published you will be the first to know!
Looks like Dan Johnson has penned another installment in Tall Tales & True Stories. I imagine that he will miss next week’s post due to participating at the Dixie Grand. Just a warning, try not to give him anything to write about because he will eventually post it.
From what the weatherman says the weather looks good except for Wednesday at Bostic. After that is will be cool in the morning with low 50’s but will warm up into the 70’s. I talked to Phil Berkowitz last week and he said Charlie Brown had a saying about shooting conditions called “69”. I asked Phil what that meant and he said 60 degrees and wind no more than 9 miles per hour. I hope he is at the Dixie because I am going to ask him.
That will do it for this week, and the smoke report should be loaded next week. I might have limited access to internet at the shoot, but I might have to roll over to McDonalds and sign on. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Barron, Mark C, Mark S, Dan, John W, Jimmy D, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
