July 16, 2005. Southern Zone Championship Singles at the Homegrounds in Bostic, NC.
Typical hot July day in North Carolina for the Championship Singles in the Southern Zone tournament. I was shooting leadoff, Randy Moeller was on post 2, George Sudderth post 3, Jim Wilson post 4 and Don Olson post 5.
We had shot the first hundred in the morning, all of us breaking good scores except George. George had shot great! He ran the 100, center punching them all.
We went out for the back half mid afternoon. It was a hot, cloudless day with minimal breeze making for perfect conditions. We got through the next 50 targets with George still straight. We got going on the next 25 with all of us paying real attention to George’s progress.
As I moved to post 5, that put Randy moving to post one. As he’s walking to position his phone starts ringing (why he had it on him? )anyway, the problem is he answered it………..we’re 5 targets from finishing that trap and George is running them………….
We all heard him say hi Dad! The conversation went like this:
Dad says something
Randy- Dad, I’m shooting
Dad- says something
Randy- umm, Dad, I’m shooting right now
Dad- says something
Randy- no Dad, you don’t understand. I’m shooting right now, I’m on the line
The rest of us-Randy! Get off the phone. Randy, throw that thing out over the traphouse we’ll take care of it!
Finally Randy says I’ll call you later and hangs up.
OK. Reset. Squad ready? Pull It! Game back on! George finishes that round unscathed.
Kudos to Boy George. He hammered out the 200 by crushing the final 25. This earned him top spot for the site and tied him for Zone. After several more rounds, George ended up with Zone Runner Up Champ.
Now, Randy Moeller is a great guy. He was a Remington rep at the time. Randy is the kind of guy that would do anything for anyone. He was sincerely apologetic for this little faux pa. Randy shot out of the Rockingham Gun Club. We shot many, many targets together. He has since moved on in his career and left North Carolina. I hope he continues to fare well with whatever he does. We'll hear more on Randy in the future............
See you next time wherever it is. Travel Safe. Dan
