March 17th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

Note: The Watauga Gun Club has cancelled their March 22nd shoot. Due to the devastation by Helene, the club isn't quite ready for competition. Donna Cornett was nice enough to remind me of the cancellation. I know the trapshooting community is looking forward to shooting at Watauga in the near future!

Monday March 17th and hopefully everyone reading this survived the band of storms that rolled through North Carolina Sunday. That line of storms reached from Virginia to Florida and wreaked havoc. Hopefully the weather will level out this week.

Durham shot Saturday and Dan Johnson won the singles and the HOA, Hunter Miller won the handicap, and Jacob Gossett won the doubles. The weather was dark, and Dan commented that in doubles he would shoot the first bird and couldn’t find the second bird. Their next shoot is May 18th.

Two shooting events this week with CCLEOA shooting a BIG50 Friday and Old Hickory shooting a 300-target program Saturday. I have the CCLEOA info and will post it. Marty will post the OHRM program when he gets back from Odessa.

The Southern Grand experienced some weather delays Sunday and shooting will crank back up Monday morning at 9AM. Not exactly sure if the handicap finished but the shootoffs will have to take place. Right now, I know Tiffany Decker, Richard Long, Jeff Galloway have won trophies, and I know that Marty is in a shootoff for Sunday doubles with a 93. Once all the scores are posted I will try to report them next week.

I got a message that one of our NC Singles, Doubles and HOA champions gun blew up. I do not have all the details on his Perazzi and I hope California resident Buddy Jensen is ok. Hopefully it was just metal fatigue and not a hot load. Buddy sent me some pictures and I will post them under North Carolina Hot Shots.

Dan Johnson has been posting stories on this site under “Tall Tails & True Stories”. Go look and I know he has a lot more stories to share about trapshooting in North Carolina. If it is funny and I know it is he will probably share it.

The Rockingham County Gun Club hosted an intro to trapshooting clinic Saturday and 34 people showed up for the instruction. Lane Murray did the intro and then two fields were used for instruction. There was little or no wind, but it was dark with very little light on the targets. Hopefully we will have some folks come out to join us for the fun shoots and BIG 50’s.

I have a couple of things I am working on, and they include updating the Hall of Fame section and creating a “gone but never forgotten” thread. A few pictures of the deceased shooter and I might be reaching out to their friends to write up something in their honor. Trapshooting attracts all sorts of folks and that is what makes it interesting.

Everyone have a great week and hopefully folks can get out and get some practice in. Dan Johnson has been checking into the Mt. Willing Road Senior Center on Wednesdays for smoke therapy. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Art, Will, Mark, Thea and Anne and until next week………smokem
