The Contact Lens

Post by straightaway »

This little event occurred at Buckhorn Gun Club in Mebane, NC It was a warm summer NC morning with the promise of elevated temperatures as the day went on.

I had been shooting with a contact lens and “regular” shooting glasses for a while at this point, At the time it was more comfortable and effective for me. Mr. Wilson decided he wanted to give contacts a try. He had gone to the eye doctor, had an examination and subsequently purchased prescription contacts.

On the day in question, I was on Trap2 shooting a practice round to figure out which one of me showed up that day prior to the scheduled start of the first event. I was maybe on the 2nd or 3rd post when James came out on the porch and started hollering that I needed to get in the building ASAP, I said that I had a few more posts to go and that I would be in as soon as I finished up.

It was then that James insisted that I come in and assist him. I had no idea at the time what the problem was, but, due to the nature of his plea I figured it must be important, so I abandoned my practice and went inside the clubhouse. Jim then shared with me that he had gotten contacts. Issue was he was having difficulty getting them in his eyes.

Now, if you know Jim you know this, if you don’t know him, I’ll tell you. The man has fingers the size of bananas……….this condition is not ideal for precisely positioning a contact lens into ones eye………….

He now requested that I accompany him into the men’s room to coach him through getting the contacts in his eyes. So I did. Now, the men’s room at Buckhorn has limited space at the mirror over the sink. I was behind James, watching his attempts in the mirror offering encouragement and direction as he repeatedly tried to properly get one in his right eye.

While this was going on, Morris Carroll came down the hallway not knowing we were in there and had gotten to just short of the doorway. What Morris saw and heard at that time was, I, very close behind to Jim saying “easy, easy, it’s almost in, you won’t hardly feel a thing when it’s there.
Morris then loudly says, what the h__!! Are you two doing??? Followed by never mind I don’t want to know………

This was one that Morris never let us forget…………

Until next time wherever it is. Travel safe. Dan
