September 16th Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

I hope everyone had a great weekend. Several shoots in North Carolina over the weekend and a lot of folks practicing for the Dixie Grand which is just around the corner. Rockingham shot Saturday and Sunday and Charlie Brown shot Sunday.

Rockingham County shot Saturday and the weather was nice but a bit windy at times. Matthew Coates from Virginia won the singles with a 98, handicap with a 97 and the HOA with 281x300. Jacob Gossett won the doubles with an 89. $100 was awarded for each hi-gun winner and when I asked Matthew what he was going to do with the money he said – gas.

Sunday RCGC hosted a BIG50 with Mark Cox breaking a 49 in the singles, Hunter Miller 48 in handicap and Mark Cox 46 in doubles. Jacob took HOA with 48/46/46=140x150. Mark and Jacob shotoff for singles and doubles with Mark breaking a 25 and 20 in the extra rounds.

The Charlie Brown Gun Club hosted a BIG50 Sunday, and it was well attended. Some rain was reported along with windy conditions but that did not keep good scores from being broken. 20/13/14 stepped to the line and a good group of youth shooters showed up to compete. Caleb Watkins won the singles with a 49 and handicap with a 48. Harper Nelms won doubles with a 48 and Megan Smith HOA with a 136.

The Dixie Grand is just a few days away and will take place September 24-29. www.Presquad.com is up and running and available if you want to get signed up before the event. The Dixie has become popular with shooters chasing those All-American points and competitors from all over the country show up to participate. I remember traveling to Florida to shoot in January at the Silver Dollar and the weather was unpredictable and especially the wind. Take a day and ride if nothing else to observe some of the best shooters smashing clay.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tim and Kim Gallagher on Saturday. They have moved to the Durham area near the airport and shoot at DCWC. They used to live in Minnesota with Tim being a retired firefighter and Kim is still working. Both shoot some rather nice Kolar shotguns and told them about some upcoming shoots including the Chicken Wing Fling in Boone in October. They are used to cooler weather and hopefully they can attend some of the shoots during our winter months.

I talked to Horace Best over the weekend, and he had a close encounter with the weed eater at his cabin. He returned to get it from where he was working and while walking up the hill fell and injured his thumb. Hopefully it will be healed up good enough to compete at the Dixie.

That will do it for this week, and it looks like a tropical storm is headed inland this week and glad it isn’t next week for sure. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, John, Mark, Thea and Anne and until next week……smokem
