March 31st Smoke Report

Post by smokem »

Can you believe we are one day from April and let the shooting begin. One shoot over the weekend at Charlie Browns and Buckhorn hosts a two-day event this weekend. On the horizon you will find the Georgia State and then a week later the South Carolina State/NCHOF. WWW.presquad.com is open so go sign up now!

CCLEOA shot last week on a Friday, and I have those results. They had 11 shooters show up with some windy conditions. They also had the handicap winner Stephen Cox sign up for the ATA. Billy Soper won the singles with a 46 and the doubles with a 41. Stephen Cox won the handicap with a 43 and the HOA with a 122. I hope to make it down there one day.

Charlie Brown hosted a BIG50 Sunday, and they had a great turnout. 26/20/11 stepped to the line with overcast skies, warm temps and moderate wind. Caleb Watkins won the singles with a 48, handicap with a 47 (1/2 yard punch) and the HOA with a 137. Harper Nelms was the doubles winner with a 47. Thanks to all that attended and to everyone that pitched in and helped.

Buckhorn shoots this weekend both Saturday and Sunday. I am not a mind reader but “normally” it will be 100 16’s, 100 caps and 50 pair of doubles both days. Now I might be wrong and if I am I will update the smoke report to show the corrections. At 9:05 PM Sunday night Jimmy Wilson confirmed my predictions! Saturday weather looks better than Sunday, but it is called trap for a reason.

The North Carolina Hall of Fame programs have been sent out and I have one. The South Carolina State Shoot programs have been sent out according to George Powell and Terri Campbell is sending me the electronic document and it will be posted shortly. Hopefully you will be attending the Hall of Fame banquet Saturday night to celebrate the induction of Brian Keever and Noah Gouge. The combined shoot was well attended last year when it was held in April.

John Sandell is back home after his trip to and around Florida. I imagine he is glad to be back home, and it will be interesting to see just how many shells John and his wife Grace spent on their adventures.

Harlan Campbell is in Reidsville NC and providing instruction through next week. He has a few spots open on his two-day Thurs/Fri and Sat/Sun clinics. If this is something you have put off and can attend, you can contact him on his website. Horace Best is taking the Thurs/Fri clinic, and I might ride up to have dinner with him one night to talk about the old days of North Carolina trapshooting. Since 1924 there have been only 15 shooters that have broken 200 to win the NC State Singles Championship and Horace did it in 1986. That is quite an honor and if Horace had kept shooting, he would have missed out on some important times and memories with his family. Glad to see him back out amongst us!

Be sure to check out the latest story by Dan Johnson in "Tall Tales and True Stories" in the Lodge. He traveled to the Florida State Shoot and got out carded after a 197 in the championship singles.

That will do it for this week. It looks like a little weather coming in Monday and maybe it will take care of some of this pollen. Hello to Scott, Ronnie, Cowboy, Tim, Bobby, Phil, Mac, Barron, John, Will, Mark, Thea and Anne and until next week….smokem
